Né en 1968 à Cuba, Armando Marino est un artiste qui intervient au croisement dedifférents mondes et associe de nombreux contrastes esthétiques issus du langagetraditionnel et contemporain. Voyageur compulsif et curieux, il commence par explorerl’Europe avec les Pays-Bas et la France. Puis, les Etats Unis lui offrent le cadre enchanteurde la Vallée de L’Hudson et New-York où il finira par s’installer.Dans cette exposition personnelle à la galerie Anne De Villepoix, se retrouvent lespeintures significatives de l’artiste dominées par la couleur et le mystère.En effet, les oeuvres d’Armando Marino se caractérisent par une palette chromatiquepuissante et saturée, issue des magazines, de l’iconographie digitale, des nuancesincandescentes de nos écrans.A l’instar des mouvements du début du XXème siècle, fauvisme ou Die Brücke, il installela couleur au premier rang. Il crée une tension visuelle grâce aux contrastes entre lesrouges, les verts, les jaunes et les bleus. Cette impression est d’autant plus forte queMariño construit chacune de ses oeuvres avec plusieurs couches de peinture à l’huile,souvent sur la base de jaune de cadmium ou d'orange, délicatement superposéesjusqu'à ce l’éclat soit atteint. Son geste expressionniste fait apparaître des halos épais etmulticolores qui cristallisent une atmosphère parfois violente, souvent spectaculaire.A la manière des peintres Nabis, cette densité est accentuée par un jeu d’échelle et deconcentration ; les oeuvres sont toutes de formats différents et les sujets sont traités enplus ou moins gros plans comme s’il pratiquait une manoeuvre de focalisation mentale.Cette formidable palette de couleurs associée à une quantité d’effets plastiques laissentapparaître des paysages sauvages comparables aux arborescences de Daniel Richter.À l’intérieur, des personnages sublimes investissent la toile et semblent directementissus d’un temps éphémère de rêves, de visions hallucinées, de souvenirs.Chaque oeuvre, dans une danse de teintes enflammées, est possédée par un nouveaumaître. Guerriers, sorciers, nymphes et esprits se dévoilent et se livrent à des rituelsvaudou. Réveillés par les alizés, les feux crépitent et les métamorphoses jaillissent auxrythmes effrénés des tambours chamaniques. L’artiste nous engloutit dans ce mondeocculte, éden tropical où les premiers hommes et puisent leur vitalité dans ces junglesfabuleuses. Le titre de l’exposition « Still Rise » est tiré d’un poème du même nom, écrit en 1978 parla poétesse Maya Angelou. Ce texte puissant, décrit l’absolue nécessité de cettemilitante afro-américaine, à résister contre l’effacement de sa culture et de son identité.Il s’associe à cet esprit de lutte pour défendre sa place en tant qu’artiste dans le contexteincertain et inquiétant des Etats Unis, se bat contre l’exclusion et pour la survie sacréation.Dans une quête spirituelle, ce poète chromatique, tourmenté et visionnaire crée uneoeuvre vibrante et symbolique.
