Derrick Adams est un artiste né à Baltimore, dont le travail admiré par la critique englobe la peinture, le collage, la sculpture, la performance, la vidéo et les installations sonores. Sa pratique multidisciplinaire s'intéresse aux façons dont les idéaux, les aspirations et les personnalités des individus s'attachent à des objets, des couleurs, des textures, des symboles et des idéologies spécifiques. Son travail explore l'influence de la culture populaire sur la formation de l'image de soi et la relation entre l'homme et le monument lorsqu'ils coexistent et s'incarnent. Adams est également profondément immergé dans les questions de la façon dont les expériences afro-américaines se recoupent avec l'histoire de l'art, l'iconographie américaine et le consumérisme. Notamment dans son Floatersérie, il dépeint les Noirs américains à loisir, affirmant que le répit lui-même est un acte politique lorsqu'il est adopté par les communautés noires. La radicalité de cette position s'est matérialisée dans le travail d'Adams à travers ses séries Deconstruction Worker, Figure in the Urban Landscape et Beauty World .
En termes formels, la pratique d'Adams est enracinée dans les philosophies déconstructivistes liées à la fragmentation et à la manipulation de la structure et de la surface, et au mariage de formes complexes et improbables. Sa tendance à superposer, à hybrider et à coller non seulement des images et des matériaux, mais aussi différents types d'expériences sensorielles, lie l'artiste à une lignée estimable de pionniers allant de Hannah Höch et Henri Matisse à William H. Johnson et Romare Bearden. Dans l'art d'Adams, le processus peut également être compris comme un analogue : « Tout ce que nous sommes est basé sur une construction spécifique », a-t-il un jour remarqué.
Adams a obtenu son MFA de l'Université Columbia et son BFA du Pratt Institute. Il est un ancien élève de la Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture et du programme Studio de la Fondation Marie Walsh Sharpe.
Résidence de la Fondation Robert Rauschenberg (2019), d'une bourse de la Fondation Gordon Parks (2018), d'un prix d'artiste Studio Museum Joyce Alexander Wein (2016) et d'un prix Louis Comfort Tiffany (2009). Il a fait l'objet de nombreuses expositions personnelles, dont Where I'm From — Derrick Adams (2019) à The Gallery in Baltimore City Hall ; Derrick Adams : Sanctuary (2018) au Museum of Arts and Design, New York ; et Derrick Adams : Transmission (2018) au Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver.
