"Figure majeure des artistes femmes engagéespolitiquement, Martha Rosler réalise des photographies, des vidéos et des installations appuyées par de nombreuxtextes théoriques.

Lepouvoir et le rapport que nous entretenons avec lui constitue l'un des thèmesrécurrents de son travail. En cela sa démarche se rapproche de celles deBarbara Kruger, Cindy Sherman ou encore Sherrie Levine qui, dans les années 80,utilisent  et replacent la photographie àl'intérieur d'un contexte social.

Martha Rosler s'est fait connaître au débutdes années 70 par ses photomontages sur la guerre du Vietnam -Bringing the War Home, House Beautiful, 1967-1972."Ses collages semblaient répondre à la frustation de l'artisteface aux images vues à la télévision, publiées dans la presse ou encorereproduites sur certaines affiches ou flyers.

Dans ces collages, Martha Rosler reconnectedeux réalités disjointes du monde : la guerre du Vietnam et les Intérieurs américains. Jean-Luc Godardexplorera les mêmes disjonctions entre la société de consommation et la luttepalestinienne dans Ici et Ailleurs,1974."

Martha Rosler a présenté notamment à la galerie unesérie de neuf photographies intitulées Rightsof Passage  réalisées entre 1994 et1996. Prises à travers le pare-brise de sa voiture,ces photographies nous font découvrir la route, les ponts, les échangeursautoroutiers de New York et du New Jersey, le flux des camions chargés designes publicitaires et les espaces de liberté qu'ouvre et symbolise la route américaine.

"La route, l'automobile, la rue, lemétro... Autant de lieux qui dans les pays riches, constituent des expériencesquotidiennes, modèlent les vies et créent des paysages de rêve qui ne renvoientà rien d'imaginé jusqu'alors. La route américaine est la promesse et lacondition préalable à la possesssion du "bien être". Pourtant ce doublerêve d'évasion et de possesssion disparaît au profit d'une uniformisationcroissante des paysages."
