Richard Nonas est né à New York en 1936. Il a fait ses études à l'Université du Michigan, au Lafayette College, à l'Université de Columbia et à l'Université de Caroline du Nord, d'abord en littérature, puis en Anthropologie sociale. Il a travaillé en tant qu'anthropologue pendant 10 ans, enseignant à l'université de Caroline du Nord et au Queens College, et a effectué des travaux de terrain sur les Indiens d'Amérique. Il y a environ 30 ans, il a quitté l'anthropologie et a commencé à faire de la sculpture. Depuis il a beaucoup exposé dans le monde entier, réalisant de petites et de très grandes œuvres à l'intérieur et à l'extérieur.
